Smith College to serve Indigo Coffee
NORTHAMPTON - Indigo Coffee Roasters, a Northampton-based independent artisan roaster, was again selected by the Smith College dining services to provide coffee for its 22 campus dining rooms.Indigo Coffee was also chosen in 2002 when, at the urging of students, Smith made a commitment to offer only Fair Trade Organic coffees in all of its residential dining halls.
The coffee is certified fair trade by TransFair USA and certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Fair Trade guarantees small farming families a minimum price per pound for their harvest. The coffee is grown with no herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and almost all are shade-grown - a cultivation method that preserves migratory bird routes, helps control land erosion and provides diversity of crops.
